TOOTH EROSION

is it possible your teeth are eroding and you haven't noticed?

WHAT IS TOOTH EROSION?

Tooth erosion is the loss of tooth substance that is not associated with a microbial factor like caries, but with the chemical reaction of various acids on the tooth's surface. The acids initially destroy the tooth's enamel and then in more serious situations the tooth's dentin.

WHAT CAUSES TOOTH EROSION?

the increase in acids in the mouth's cavity can be the result of several causes:

  • the regular or prolonged consumption of acidic foods and drinks (e.g. oranges, fizzy drinks, juice, wine)
  • gastroesophageal reflux disease (a disease that allows the stomach's acids to come up to the mouth)
  • frequent vomiting (e.g. during pregnancy or in eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia)
  • reduced saliva (see dry mouth), the is the natural way the mouth controls the acidity levels (e.g. because of certain medications, due to radiation to the head area etc.)
  • frequent swimming in pools (when chlorine mixes with water it creates acidic compounds)
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF EROSION?

In the first stages of tooth erosion, the teeth can still look healthy and the phenomenon may only be seen by the dentist and not by the patient. In later stages, the patient can see the change in the teeth and may also incur some pain.

teeth with advanced erosion

Clinically teeth with erosion show the following symptoms:

  • increase transparency and thinning (especially on the front teeth)
  • colour change (dulling or discolourisation of the teeth with pale yellow or dark yellow spots)
  • change to the shape and size of the teeth (due to deterioration)
  • cracks or fractures (usually at the edges)
  • caries (which develops in the under layers)
  • sensitivity (during brushing or on contact with cold, hot or sweet stimulations)
  • pain (if the tooth's nerve is affected)
AT WHAT AGE CAN TOOTH EROSION OCCUR?

Tooth erosion can occur at any age. It is particularly common in children becuase their milk teeth have less metallic elements, they are softer and therefore erode easily, they are also exposed to a diet that incldues acidic foods such as fruit, juice and fizzy drinks etc.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT TOOTH EROSION?

The damage caused by erosion is permenant and cannot be restored without the intervention of a dentist. depending on the teeth and the damage they have incurred restoration can take place using drill free fillings, porcelain veneers, with ceramic or zirconium caps. In serious cases there may be a need for endodontic therapy before the restoration.

The dentist and orthodontist of the VSmile Piraeus team believe that the best solution for tooth erosion is prevention! To prevent erosion we suggest the following:

  • flourosis every 6 months at the dental and the daily use of toothpaste with flouride, to strenghten the tooth's enamel and to increase the resistance to acids
  • wash out the mouth with water after being sick, after eating acidic foods & drinks and do not brush immediately - brush after 1 hours as the acid soften the tooth and brushing them immediately assists with the erosion.
  • lower the consumption of acidic foods on a daily basis
  • lower the consumption of acidic drinks especially fizzy drinks and energy drinks - a good idea is to drink them through a straw so that the acid has less contact with the teethdrink with straws
  • use Chios mastixa or other sugar-free chewing gum that increase the saliva in the mouth and reduce the acids
  • regular brushing and dental check-ups to find the problem at the beginning
  • information of the affect of tooth erosion on certain groups of people such as children, athletes, patients with special needs, oncology patients, pregnant patients, patients with eating disorders such as bulimia, anorexia, with gastroesophageal reflux disease and anyone taking medication that causes dry mouth (e.g. for depression)

Remember:

  • If you consume acidic foods or drinks over 3 times a day, you are at risk for enamel erosion
  • Fizzy drinks contain acid that is stronger than that of a car battery
  • Fizzy drinks not only destroy teeth but also fillings
  • Green tea is highly acidic in contrast with black tea
  • Diet driks are more erosive than those containing sugar
  • Teeth are destroyed by bad habits
